The First 5 Steps: How to Make a Proper Diagnosis

Before you start writing your script, a critical step must be taken. A proper diagnosis must be made of the environment of the presentation: You can’t start writing a script if you haven’t defined the objective of the presentation or if you don’t know the audience for whom you’ll be making the presentation.

 

And so we advise you to do the following to arrive at a diagnosis that will enable you to write the ideal presentation script:

 

1. Who is your audience?

Try to learn: the profile(s), age(s), nationality(ies), specific(s) interest(s) and level(s) of knowledge of the prospective attendees. But, above all, try to determine what are their needs. Without this information you won’t be able to tailor your story, your speech and your attitude to your audience.

 

2. What is the context in which the presentation will take place?

Before you start writing your script, it’s important to know if your presentation is to be integrated into a larger event or if it will stand alone. If it’s to be integrated into an event, determine the nature and purpose of that event, where you’ll be making your presentation, and what kinds of topics will be covered in the presentations that come before and after yours.

 

Here, it’s also important to know what kind of technology will be at your disposal. A computer with Windows and PowerPoint projector? A Mac?

 

Finally, it’s also important to know beforehand the sizes of the expected audience and the space in which you’ll be presenting. Speaking to an audience of 2,000 is far different from speaking to thirty, so your script will have to be adjusted accordingly.

 

3. How much time will you have for your presentation?

It’s crucial to know how much time is allotted for your presentation so you can anticipate how you need to divide the various parts of the story you’re going to be telling.

 

And if there’s no time restriction, don’t bow to the urge to take forever. Presentations that go on too long get boring and tend to be counterproductive.

 

4. What is your presenter profile?

The script, and so the entire presentation, must be aligned with your profile as a presenter. It makes no sense to create a show-off kind of script, for example, if you’re not a show-off type of person.

 

5. What is the goal of the presentation?

When making a presentation there’s always an objective. So before you start writing, decide what that goal is and build your script with that goal in mind.

 

To define the goal of a presentation you must consider: What do I want the audience to think, feel and/or reflect on during and after the presentation? And what do I want the audience to do?
